Cardiovascular Risk Reduction

Cardiovascular disease is the name for a group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. Risk reduction aims to lower the chance of a first heart attack or stroke, or of another event. Lifestyle changes do much of the work, and statins are used when risk is high.

Key points

  • Fat build-up in the arteries can restrict blood flow and lead to a blood clot.
  • Risk comes from lifestyle, family history and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
  • A heart attack, stroke or chest pain (angina) can be the first sign of CVD for some people.

What raises risk

CVD mainly affects people over 50, and men are more likely to develop it than women. Risk is also higher in people of South Asian, Black African or African Caribbean background. Some risk factors cannot be changed, such as age, sex and family history. Others can: smoking, drinking too much alcohol, being overweight, not being active, and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Treatment and daily habits

A healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, cutting back on alcohol and stopping smoking can often prevent CVD. When the chance of CVD is high, statins may be advised. Statins lower blood cholesterol and reduce the chance of developing CVD. Rosuvastatin is a statin tablet available in 5, 10 and 20mg strengths for hypercholesterolaemia and cardiovascular risk reduction. The rosuvastatin ingredient page gives more detail. Orders are shipped to Malaysia in discreet packaging by pharmacy partners in India.

When to seek help

Chest pain while resting, breathlessness that comes on suddenly, or weakness affecting one side of the body needs emergency care immediately.

What the sources say

  • CVD is widespread and ranks among the leading causes of death in the UK (NHS).
  • The 2021 ESC guidelines deal mainly, though not exclusively, with risk factors, risk classification and prevention of atherosclerotic CVD, and consider differences in age, sex and gender, life expectancy, risk profiles and ethnic or geographic factors (ESC).
