Assessment and safety
Urinary symptoms should be assessed before treatment starts. They can have causes other than prostate enlargement, including infection and prostate cancer. Alpha blockers can improve urine flow within weeks, while 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors reduce prostate size over months. Finasteride and dutasteride lower the PSA reading, which is taken into account in prostate cancer checks. The two groups may be combined in one tablet, as in Jalyn.
