Pulmonary Embolism

A pulmonary embolism happens when a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks a pulmonary artery. The clot often starts in a deep vein of the leg. It is a medical emergency.

Key points

  • A clot from a deep leg vein can break free and block an artery in the lung.
  • Anticoagulants are used from the emergency phase through recovery.
  • Rivaroxaban is taken by mouth and does not need routine blood-test monitoring.

What causes it

Most clots begin in a deep leg vein, a condition called deep vein thrombosis. Part of the clot can detach, travel with the blood and lodge in an artery in the lung.

Symptoms

Sudden breathlessness, sharp chest pain that is worse when breathing in, a rapid heart rate and coughing up blood are warning signs. These can appear quickly.

Treatment with anticoagulants

Anticoagulant medicine is central to care, both in the emergency phase and during recovery. It limits the clot and lowers the chance of new ones. Rivaroxaban is an oral anticoagulant. The Rivaroxaban product is supplied as 10, 15 and 20mg tablets. How long treatment continues depends on whether a trigger was found or the clot arose without one. People with heart and blood pressure conditions may need extra consideration when an anticoagulant is chosen.

When to get help

Anyone with the symptoms above needs emergency care at once, without waiting to see whether they settle.
