Beclometasone

Beclometasone is a corticosteroid that is inhaled to keep asthma controlled over the long term. It is a preventer, taken on a regular schedule rather than when symptoms flare. It eases inflammation in the airways and makes flare-ups less likely. It does not relieve an attack that has already begun.

Key points

  • The medicine is delivered into the airways, so the rest of the body meets far less of it than with steroid tablets taken by mouth.
  • Rinsing the mouth and spitting out the water after each dose helps limit hoarseness, throat irritation and oral thrush.
  • Wheeze or chest tightness that worsens straight after a dose can signal paradoxical bronchospasm and needs immediate medical attention.

What beclometasone is used for

Beclometasone is used for the long-term control of Asthma. Used regularly, it keeps airway inflammation down, which reduces how often symptoms develop. It is not a reliever and cannot stop an attack already under way.

Because the dose acts where the inflammation sits, inhaled beclometasone is used for ongoing control in preference to steroid tablets, which affect the whole body. The benefit depends on taking it consistently, including on days when breathing feels fine.

How it works

Beclometasone binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the cells lining the airways. That action reduces swelling and lowers airway sensitivity, so the airways react less to triggers. Esterase enzymes convert it to beclometasone-17-monopropionate, the metabolite that carries most of the anti-inflammatory activity.

Changes build over several days rather than within minutes, and control holds while the inhaler is used regularly. Inhaler technique should be checked, because poor technique leaves less medicine reaching the lungs.

Forms and strengths on MayChemist

Beclometasone Inhaler is a pressurised metered-dose inhaler supplying 200mcg per actuation, as a suspension, for asthma. Used correctly, it delivers the dose straight into the lungs. Pharmacy partners in India ship orders to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Safety

Beclometasone should not be used by anyone hypersensitive to it. A hoarse voice and throat irritation are the milder reactions; oral candidiasis and cough are also reported. Paradoxical bronchospasm, a worsening of breathing immediately after inhalation, is serious and requires immediate medical attention.

Rinsing the mouth after each dose reduces the chance of thrush and throat symptoms. Children on long-term treatment have their height monitored. In pregnancy, consult your doctor; before breastfeeding, confirm suitability with a qualified clinician or pharmacist. Use follows what is prescribed for the age group.

What the sources say

  • Applied topically, beclometasone dipropionate has potent anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects. (SmPC)
  • Systemic effects can occur with nasal corticosteroids, particularly at high doses used for long periods; possible effects include Cushing’s syndrome, adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children and adolescents, cataract, glaucoma, and more rarely psychological or behavioural effects such as sleep disorders, anxiety, depression or aggression, especially in children. (SmPC)
  • After intranasal administration, absolute bioavailability is about 44%. (SmPC)
  • Esterase enzymes hydrolyse it to beclometasone-17-monopropionate, a metabolite with high topical anti-inflammatory activity. (SmPC)
