Medicine containing Famciclovir
Key points
- Famciclovir is a nucleoside analogue sold as Famvir film-coated tablets.
- It is used for herpes zoster, herpes simplex and genital herpes.
- Antiviral effect usually begins within 24 to 48 hours, and duration depends on the indication.
What famciclovir is used for
It is used to manage outbreaks of herpes zoster, herpes simplex and genital herpes. Treatment eases the outbreak; it does not clear the virus from the body. The medicine sits within the antivirals class.
How it works
After a dose, famciclovir is converted to penciclovir. Penciclovir inhibits viral DNA polymerase, interrupting viral DNA synthesis and replication. With the virus unable to multiply freely, the body has a better chance to manage the infection.
Forms and brands
Famvir film-coated tablets contain famciclovir in 250 mg and 500 mg strengths. Pharmacy partners in India ship orders to Malaysia in discreet packaging.
Safety and interactions
Famciclovir is not for anyone with a hypersensitivity to famciclovir. Kidney impairment needs a dose adjustment, and adequate hydration should be maintained. Headache and nausea are the common reactions; dizziness and abdominal discomfort can also occur. Hallucinations or jaundice are serious and require immediate medical attention. Probenecid interacts with famciclovir. Use with caution in elderly people, in pregnancy only if indicated, and with caution while breastfeeding.
