Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. It passes to people through the bite of an infected tick. Ticks are found in wooded and rural areas, so travel to forested regions carries a small but real risk.

Key points

  • A spreading rash often appears within days or weeks of a bite, and may form a bull’s-eye shape.
  • Tiredness, fever, headache and aching joints can follow the rash.
  • Untreated infection can later involve the joints, the heart and the nervous system.

Signs and symptoms

The first sign is usually a rash that spreads from the bite site, sometimes with a bull’s-eye pattern. Fatigue, fever, headache and joint aches commonly accompany it. If it goes untreated, the bacteria can reach the joints, the heart and the nervous system, sometimes months after the bite.

Treatment

In adults and older children, doxycycline is usually the first antibiotic chosen for early Lyme disease. It blocks the bacteria’s protein synthesis. Vibramycin tablets contain doxycycline 100mg and are listed for Lyme disease, among other uses. The generic is described on the doxycycline page, and it sits within the wider antibiotics group.

A full course clears most early infections. Later-stage illness may need a longer course or a different antibiotic, decided by a doctor. Pharmacy partners in India ship to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

When to see a doctor

Get medical attention promptly if a rash spreads after a tick bite, or if facial palsy, joint swelling or a severe headache develops.
