Doxycycline

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It is used to treat some bacterial infections and certain skin conditions, and to prevent malaria in specific circumstances. It blocks bacterial protein synthesis, which limits bacterial growth. It is broad-spectrum, so it can act against a range of bacteria.

Key points

  • Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic with activity against a broad range of bacteria.
  • It is used for acne vulgaris, certain bacterial infections and malaria prophylaxis.
  • Effects usually begin within 1–2 hours and last 12–24 hours.

What it is and what it is used for

Doxycycline is used for acne vulgaris, chlamydia trachomatis, Lyme disease, respiratory tract infection, bacterial infection and malaria prophylaxis. It is an antibiotic, so it is intended for conditions caused by bacteria or for specific prevention uses. Malaria prophylaxis is a preventive use, not a treatment for malaria.

How it works

Doxycycline is broad-spectrum. It inhibits the production of proteins that bacteria need to grow and multiply. This stops bacterial growth and gives the immune system a chance to clear the infection. In acne, the same action helps reduce inflammation.

Forms and brands

Vibramycin and Doxycycline are 100mg tablets. Doxycycline can also be supplied as hard capsules. Both products contain doxycycline. Pharmacy partners in India ship to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

Before you take it

Do not take doxycycline if you are allergic to tetracyclines, are pregnant, or are under 8 years old. Pregnancy is contraindicated, and breastfeeding is avoided. Avoid prolonged sunlight. Use a full glass of water when swallowing it, and avoid taking it with dairy or antacids. Calcium, magnesium and iron salts are interactions.

Side effects

Common effects are nausea, photosensitivity and diarrhoea. Oesophagitis and vaginal candidiasis can occur. Anaphylaxis and intracranial hypertension are serious effects that need immediate medical attention.
