Malaria Prophylaxis

Malaria is a serious infection that mosquitoes spread in some parts of the world. Prophylaxis means taking an antimalarial medicine before, during and after travel to an area where malaria occurs, so that parasites from a bite are cleared before they cause illness.

Key points

  • Malaria is a parasitic disease passed on by the bite of an infected mosquito.
  • Untreated malaria can become severe, and it is an emergency that needs prompt treatment.
  • Preventive medicine works best alongside steps that reduce mosquito bites.

How doxycycline works

Doxycycline sits in the antibiotics class. It interferes with the parasite’s development within red blood cells, which makes it relevant where resistant strains circulate. Protection depends on steady dosing, and missed doses weaken it. A course normally begins one or two days before arrival in a risk area and carries on for four weeks after leaving. Repellent, covering up at dusk and treated nets should run alongside the tablets.

Safety and when to get help

Malaria can be fatal when it is not diagnosed and treated quickly. Anyone with symptoms who has travelled to a country where malaria is found in the past 12 months should seek urgent medical help.
