Key points

  • The pain does not come from ongoing tissue injury; damaged or misfiring nerves produce the signal.
  • It can continue after the illness that caused the nerve damage has resolved.
  • Gabapentin and amitriptyline are established treatments, and relief may require more than one medicine.

Causes and triggers

Diabetes, shingles, chemotherapy, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis can all affect nerves. Alcohol overuse and nutritional deficiencies can harm peripheral nerves over time.

Symptoms

Burning sensations, electric shocks and pins and needles are common. Even light touch can feel extreme.

Treatment

Treatment targets nerve signalling rather than inflammation. Gabapentin is used as a first-line option and is available as Neurontin tablets in 100, 300, 400 and 600mg strengths. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant; it is also used for neuropathic pain and may work at doses below those needed for depression. It is available as Amitriptyline tablets in 10, 25, 50 and 75mg strengths. Many people need more than one treatment, and some benefit from combining them. Orders are shipped to Malaysia from pharmacy partners in India in discreet packaging.

When to see a doctor

Seek medical attention promptly if neuropathic pain starts suddenly, comes with weakness or loss of control over the bladder, or worsens rapidly.
