Stroke Prevention

A stroke happens when blood stops reaching part of the brain. It can affect speech and movement, and recovery may take a long time. Urgent hospital care is needed because it can be life-threatening. Stroke prevention lowers the risk from clots or bleeding, especially after a stroke or TIA, or with atrial fibrillation.

Key points

  • A clot or a burst vessel can stop blood reaching the brain, so prevention focuses on clotting and bleeding risk.
  • In atrial fibrillation, a clot can form in the heart and travel to the brain.
  • Warning signs include a drooping face, weak arm or slurred speech. These need urgent help, and a TIA needs same-day review.

Causes and triggers

Most strokes are ischaemic, caused by a clot blocking an artery. Others happen when a blood vessel bursts. Atrial fibrillation and a previous stroke or TIA raise the risk.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually come on suddenly. A drooping face, weakness in one arm and slurred speech are warning signs. These signs mean calling the local emergency number at once.

Treatment

For atrial fibrillation, anticoagulants lower the risk of a heart clot reaching the brain. Rivaroxaban tablets are listed for stroke prevention, and also for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The tablets come in 10mg, 15mg and 20mg strengths. These treatments sit within broader heart and blood pressure care. Orders are shipped to Malaysia in discreet packaging.

When to seek medical help

A stroke needs urgent hospital treatment. Do not wait to see whether symptoms pass. A TIA also needs same-day medical review.
