Key points
- Perindopril begins to act within about an hour, and a dose keeps working for roughly 24 hours.
- Kidney function is checked regularly throughout treatment.
- A dry cough and dizziness are the tolerability problems most often reported.
What perindopril is used for
Perindopril treats hypertension, where blood pressure stays higher than it should. It is also used in heart failure and for stable coronary artery disease. In each case the aim is long-term control rather than a short course of treatment.
How it works
The body converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II with the help of an enzyme, angiotensin-converting enzyme. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it tightens blood vessels. Perindopril inhibits that enzyme, so less angiotensin II is produced. Vessels widen, resistance to blood flow falls, and the heart pumps against a lower pressure.
Perindopril is available as Perindopril 4 mg film-coated tablets. Other cardiovascular medicines are grouped in the Heart & Blood Pressure category. Orders are shipped to Malaysia by pharmacy partners in India in discreet packaging.
Safety
Perindopril must not be used by anyone with a history of angioedema, during pregnancy, or where renal artery stenosis is present. Breastfeeding is not recommended. Because the medicine lowers blood pressure, symptomatic hypotension is a risk, and renal function needs regular checking.
Dizziness and a dry cough are common minor effects. Headache, fatigue and low blood pressure are also reported. Angioedema and hyperkalaemia are serious and need immediate medical attention; angioedema can appear as swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs.
Potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium and NSAIDs interact with perindopril. Potassium supplements and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen are among the non-prescription products that can interact.
What the sources say
- Perindopril makes blood flow more smoothly by preventing the production of natural chemicals that tighten the blood vessels. (MedlinePlus)
- It controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. (MedlinePlus)
- Valsartan with sacubitril (Entresto) should not be taken alongside perindopril, and a 36-hour gap is needed after stopping it. (MedlinePlus)
- People with diabetes who also take aliskiren will probably be advised not to use perindopril. (MedlinePlus)
