Heart Failure

Heart failure means the heart cannot pump blood around the body as well as it should. It does not mean the heart has stopped. A heart that cannot keep up with its workload may leave the body short of oxygen, which shows as tiredness and breathlessness. It is a serious condition, but medicines and daily habits let many people live full lives.

Key points

  • A weakened heart cannot get enough blood to the cells, so fatigue and breathlessness follow.
  • Everyday tasks such as walking, using stairs or carrying groceries can become very difficult.
  • Family and friends who understand the condition are part of the support around someone living with it.

What heart failure can feel like

Breathlessness often comes first, particularly when lying flat or climbing stairs. Ankles and legs may swell, tiredness can persist, and the heartbeat may be fast or irregular. Some people lose their appetite or find it hard to concentrate. Capacity can fall gradually without being noticed. Seek urgent help for breathlessness that starts suddenly at rest, or for coughing up pink frothy fluid.

Medicines used in heart failure

Treatment aims to ease the workload on the heart, slow further damage and clear excess fluid. Perindopril is an ACE inhibitor that widens blood vessels, so the heart meets less resistance. Aldactone (spironolactone) blocks aldosterone; it helps the body lose excess fluid and protects heart muscle over time. Coreg contains carvedilol, and Entresto combines sacubitril with valsartan; both are used in heart failure. Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is another option. Combinations are common and regular monitoring keeps them working. Orders arrive in Malaysia from pharmacy partners in India, shipped in discreet packaging.

Living with it day to day

Cutting salt helps limit fluid retention, and weighing yourself each morning can show a flare before symptoms become obvious. Gentle activity such as short walks, kept within comfortable limits, supports heart function. Smoking, heavy drinking and untreated sleep apnoea speed decline.
